While there is a good amount of debate going on the final selection of the rupee symbol. If you may recall an open public competition was announced way back in February 2009 by the Ministry of Finance. The shortlisted entries flashed in the media in anticipation of the results being announced by the MoF, happened to be an internal exercise of the design team of Economic Times. Read more about this here. The text clearly indicates that these were done soon after the competition was announced.
There also seems to be an RTI application filed against the entire process and the manner in which it was conducted. It raises serious doubts about the intentions of the governemnt while dealing with such a project of not just national importance, but also international significance. There is also a website on this, which you can see here.
Coming to RTI, you must be aware that I was working on design a logo for the Right to Information on behalf of NID. Well, I had worked on several options in the second round of iterations and presented to the Ministry. Here is a sneak preview. Do leave your feedback, comments and suggestions.

Thanks for sharing these. I personally like the option where a file (information) is being handed out (second image). The hand visible through the file also is a nice metaphor for transparency. The logo also performs well with other Indian languages.
Being a student it would be really nice to understand the process that went behind these logos. So it would be great if you can include some doodles in your next post.
thanks Utpal for the feedback.
Yes, I am putting together a presentation on this. It has been a challenge top work on a symbol for the masses as compared to one for the corporate.
shall sure keep you all updated
First of all we would like to say thanks for spreading words about mismanagement regarding New Indian Rupee Symbol design competition
About your RTI, logos design options, we feel you need to modified your logo subconscious “message code” a little bit..
As your logo should also have to depicts that “its every citizen right to get information” under RTI ACT 2005 and no one could denied it..
If you adds above said element in your second option it will works perfectly ..
thanks for the feedback.
